Student Learning Outcomes for the Writing Program

I. First Year SLOs (A) for Writing Program
By the end of their first year, students should be able to:
1.  Use correct grammar, specifically sentence structure (avoiding fragments, run-ons, and comma splices), apostrophes, agreement (subject/ verb agreement and pronoun-antecedent agreement), verb tense, and homophones
2. Quote and cite sources and avoid plagiarism
3. Adopt the appropriate level of formality
4. Develop and support a thesis statement
5. Write an organized and coherent five-paragraph essay
6. Produce a series of developing drafts, showing their understanding that writing is a process in which prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and proofreading are all integral steps

II. B Course SLOs for Writing Program
In addition to first year SLOs, students should be able to:
1. Use specific, relevant evidence
2. Maintain focus on paper topic
3. Integrate their own ideas with those of others
4. Make sound logical arguments
5. Draw reasonable conclusions

In addition to B Course SLOs, students should be able to:
1. Find, analyze, and synthesize primary and secondary sources
2. Use more analytical than descriptive material

IV. Discipline-specific SLOs for Writing Program
In addition to B and C Course SLOs, students should be able to:
1. Use electronic environments for drafting, reviewing, revising, editing, and sharing texts
2. Locate, organize, and use research material collected from electronic sources, including scholarly library databases and internet sources
3. Evaluate and analyze outside sources for reliability, validity, accuracy, authority, currency, point of view, and bias
4. Reflect rhetorical understanding of audience, context, purpose, and genre by using discipline-specific language and conventions
